This month, the Evening Standard is campaigning for all plastic straws to be removed from London's streets. 'The Last Straw' campaign calls on restaurants, bars, cafes and coffee shops across London to take The Last Straw pledge and switch to alternatives that are kinder to the planet.

The campaign is backed by Michelin-starred Chef Jason Atherton, who said, "It is heartbreaking to see how much plastic we are using — there is no need for it."

Two billion plastic straws are thought to be thrown away each year in London, making it the plastic straw capital of Europe. The Evening Standard, stated that the UK is the biggest user of plastic straws in Europe, with an estimated 8.5 billion thrown away each year.
