More and more, British consumers are proving they support businesses that are trying to increase sustainability efforts. A 2014 study by Madano reveals that people react positively toward businesses that use sustainable packaging, with 82% agreeing that companies should use more recycled materials. The same study suggested that when it comes to food and beverages, if price and taste are the same, the consumer would choose the business with the best environmental practices. There’s no doubt that now, more than ever, addressing environmental concerns is part of the recipe for success in the takeaway business.

What does this mean for fish and chips and other takeaway traders? The increased demand for environmentally friendly packaging is a trend that isn’t going away any time soon. And with New York City banning plastic foam containers and polystyrene packaging starting from July 2015, it’s possible that U.K. businesses could be facing new regulations in the future. The good news is, that as demand increases, the availability of eco-friendly packaging is on the rise – and the prices are more affordable than you might think.

Since 2002, the research team at Biopac have been exploring alternatives to oil-based and non-biodegradable materials. Many of Biopac’s containers are made from cornstarch or sugar cane, so they can be fully composted – along with the food waste in it – making it ideal for caterers and takeaways. According to Mark Brigden, Technical Director at Biopac, while conventional plastics can take 400 years to break down, biodegradable packaging when composted is turned back into soil in less than 12 weeks.

Mr Brigden warns, "Be careful of products on the market which claim to be ‘eco-friendly’ but in reality may be just conventional plastic with an additive that merely breaks the material into fragments. These fragments still take 200 years to disappear. The best way to be certain is to ask your supplier for the relevant certifications."

In addition to customer demand and being environmentally friendly, there’s another benefit to Biopac’s innovative packaging. In fact, if food is your business, you may think it’s the most important benefit of all. Unlike polystyrene, the material used in most takeaway containers, the natural fibres of the Biopac cartons prevent condensation – that is, they don’t sweat when closed over piping hot food. Say goodbye to soggy chips forever: these containers will keep your food fresh and delicious, and because of the good thermal quality, the food remains hot. What’s more, the containers are microwavable and freezable so they’re perfect for leftovers.

In addition to the traditional fish and chips or kebab boxes, Biopac also offers a full range of boxes and containers for cold and hot foods, as well as hot and cold drink cups, food trays, napkins, cutlery, plates and bowls. Their product offerings are growing too, as the research and technical teams develop new and innovative methods and processes to bring sustainability to the food service industry.
