Northern Restaurant & Bar is the North's hospitality exhibition where the entire industry comes together for two days of networking, discovery and inspiration. This was our 6th year at the show and it didn't disappoint. Northern Restaurant & Bar 2018

As we start to put sample packs together and arrange meetings with new potential customers, we look back at the event and some of the highlights from the show.

NRB 2018

This year, visitors were able to source new products and services from 275 exhibiting suppliers, be inspired by 65 live food & drink demos, and attend a programme of events designed to make their establishment more successful. There was a real buzz in the hall with visitors attending from all over the North of England.

We met many businesses during the show from exciting new start-ups, to ambitious entrepreneurs looking to grow their portfolio even further. It was refreshing to hear so many people looking for greener alternatives at the show, with plastic free packaging being high up on their agenda. Whilst we have had many conversations over the years at NRB about eco-friendly packaging and the benefits to both businesses and our environment, there was a clear spike in interest this year, with thanks to well-publicised issues following Hugh's War on Waste, and The Blue Planet with David Attenborough. Plastics and the harm they can have on the environment is a growing concern for many and the drive for this shift in mindset is not only coming from the businesses we spoke to at the show, but their customers too.

Greater Manchester working towards plastic free status

Just next door at the Green Summit, the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham announced his ambitions for making Greater Manchester one of the leading green cities in Europe. Greater Manchester's Tourism & Hospitality sector have set a target to eradicate single use plastics by 2020 as part of a wider scheme to make their industry more sustainable. First to go will be plastic straws. Many establishments in and around Manchester have already made this postitive move and are operating their businesses sustainably with plastic free packaging. Many more will follow suit and it's great to see Manchester businesses coming together to support this cause.

Plastic free straws were a winner

The most popular at the show by far this year was our range of plastic free straws. Our compostable paper straws attracted a lot of attention, with many being shocked at how sturdy they were. Others preferred our compostable PLA straws which look and feel like plastic but they are actually made from corn starch, so much kinder to the environment.

Proud sponsors of the Craft Beer Quarter

As sponsors of the Craft Beer Quarter, all traders were using our compostable PLA half pint tumblers. These cups are very popular and widely used at festivals and outdoor events. They're made from renewable cornstarch and have 'I am not a plastic cup' printed on them giving a clear message about your commitment to the environment. The Craft Beer exhibitors and visitors liked the cups and we even had requests from other traders at the show who wanted to use them as they loved their green credentials and the message printed on them.
