Packing may be superseded by technology improvements, market changes and intelligent packaging concepts. Working collaboratively with institutes and research centres,Biopac is at the forefront of the development of new sustainable and environmentally friendly materials.

Some of our projects are summarised here

PLA Foam – Biodegradable plastics from sustainable materials.

450,000 tonnes of foamed polymer packaging (mainly expanded polystyrene) is used in the  EU each year. Biopac is harnessing state-of-the-art technology to develop biodegradable and compostable alternatives to petrochemical   based plastics.

Biopac is leading a collaborative project ,PLA FOAM, which is developing a replacement for synthetic oil based polymers which are difficult to recycle economically. .

Mark Brigden the Technical Director of Biopac who Chairs the Management Board for the PLA FOAM programme sets out the agenda “From biodegradable packaging to catering disposables, compostable cutlery to biodegradable cups, medical trays to compostable plant pots, we’re at the front line in the vital crusade against non-degradable plastics. Biopolymers are in use for a wide range of packaging applications providing advantages compared to synthetic materials – improved compostability and waste management”.

Novel Bio-Composites – Based on wheat straw

Biopac is leading member of a consortium aiming at developing a portfolio of bio-composites based on the whole utilisation of renewable wheat straw for industrial applications. The consortium includes Brunel University, Imperial College, Bangor University and other industrial partners.

The aim is to utilise the whole straw to avoid waste materials and the negative impacts to the environment associated with current extraction processes. It demonstrated that straw as a raw material can be restructured into a feedstock to develop a series of cost-effective bio-composites and products.

We are always interested in exploring new projects!
